ESR matters: Capacitors, especially electrolytic ones, exhibit an ESR that increases with age, heat, and ripple current. High ESR can cause equipment malfunctions or even permanent damage.

Faulty capacitors often bulge, leak, or overheat. However, visually perfect capacitors may still have high ESR, detectable only through measurement.
While precise ESR measurement isn’t always necessary, it’s crucial for critical applications. ESR varies with frequency, voltage, and temperature, so accurate measurements require specific conditions.

ESR meters can also measure non-inductive low-value resistances, making them useful beyond capacitors. Unlike other meters, ESR meters can assess capacitors without disconnecting them from the circuit, saving time and effort.
